Starting a career is no small feat. I’m not talking to you here of a hobbyist dilettante, a nice little blog to tell the family about your trip to Cuba. I’m talking about a real career, with the goal of creating a blog that makes money. I’m not promising you millions, because to be honest, if I knew the miracle recipe for getting rich to death, I would do like Coca-Cola, I will keep it very secret in a safe!
No, let’s be serious and don’t live in fairy tales. The goal, when talking about a blogging career, is to develop one or more blogs to earn an income. A top-up income to start, then ideally a real income that will allow you to devote yourself entirely to blogging and, ultimately, to be independent. It’s about building your blogging career like an entrepreneur. And like any entrepreneurial career, it is not suitable for everyone: it is a path that will not be easy, that will be strewn with pitfalls and to which you will have to devote a lot of your time.
To help you get started on this path, here are the 34 tips that I will give to anyone wanting to start their blogging career. Tune in to the “ entrepreneur ” mode and have a good blogging!
THE BASICS TO START YOUR BLOGGING CAREER
1 – BE PASSIONATE
Being a blogger is above all a work of passion. If you are not passionate about the subject (s) you are dealing with, then you may quickly get bored, or worse, throw in the towel altogether. So be sure to choose blogging topics that you are passionate about!
2 – BECOME AN EXPERT IN YOUR FIELD
More than an enthusiast, you will also have to be an expert in your favorite subject, and you will not have the choice to present yourself as such if you want to succeed. So, learn as much as possible about the subject you are dealing with, so that you can become a reference in the field.
3 – KNOW HOW TO WRITE WELL
Spelling, grammar, conjugation… A spell checker cannot do everything for you. But rest assured, writing well can be learned and above all, it can be worked on. I’m not talking about writing like a great novelist, but simply writing in good French, clearly and coherently.
4 – LEARN HOW TO WRITE BLOG POSTS
As my grandmother used to say, it is by forging that you become a blacksmith. So it is by reading and writing blog posts that you will learn how to write them well. In summary, use short sentences and concise paragraphs. Be direct and get straight to the point, without beating around the bush. Avoid long and convoluted descriptions, give rhythm and offer specific advice. It’s (almost) that easy!
5 – DARE TO BET ON OTHER MEDIA
In blogging, writing is a foundation, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay locked in this box. Dare to vary the media: video, podcast, possibly drawing! If you are comfortable with it then expand it, as it will be an added bonus in your blogging career.
6 – ACCEPT NEGATIVE REVIEWS
As long as they are constructive, of course. If these are gratuitous insults, ignore them, that’s the best answer. What I call “good” negative reviews are the ones that will help you improve by pointing out concrete problems that you need to correct. These criticisms, you will have to listen to them, accept them and use them to become better.
7 – ACCEPT POSITIVE REVIEWS, TOO!
Perhaps you are one of those people who are even more embarrassed to receive a positive review than a negative review? Yet, as a professional blogger, it’s essential to understand what appeals to your audience, so that you can always improve and deliver the right content. So learn to take compliments and say thank you!
8- BE PATIENT
Because the results will not be immediate and it will take time and work to be able to offer quality content, attract your target audience and then earn an income.
STARTING A BLOGGING CAREER IS ABOUT BEING YOURSELF
9 – DEVELOP YOUR STYLE
To those who talk to me about starting a blog, I often say that in my opinion, the blogger attracts readers with his content, but he retains them thanks to his style.
Let’s not hide it, the content offered on your blog will never be one hundred percent new, the ideas will certainly have been developed elsewhere, in another way (nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed!). So, develop a personality, an identity and a tone that is unique to you. This is how your audience will hook and come back to you rather than another.
10 – GIVE YOUR OPINION
Otherwise, what’s the point of making a career as a blogger? Being neutral is not in the blogger’s DNA. A blogger gives his opinion, it engages, it gives enlightened advice.
11 – GO BEYOND TECHNIQUE
You don’t write a manual! Giving practical advice is good, but add a little humanity and personal experiences to it, thanks to encouragement, avenues for reflection, anecdotes and above all little new ideas that will make the interest and the personality of your content.
12 – STAY HONEST WITH YOUR READERS
Just like I have done since the start of this article! For example, promising to make thousands of dollars in a few minutes is a selling point, but when the reader realizes that it is not that simple, he feels like he has been taken for a pigeon!
And being dishonest towards your readers can be catastrophic in the long run, because a lack of confidence means lost customers. Your reputation, especially your online reputation, is essential for your blogging career. Keep it in mind!
A CAREER AS A BLOGGER IS WORK, WORK AND MORE WORK
13 – BE PREPARED TO DEVOTE A LOT OF TIME TO IT
Understood, willing to devote time to your blogging career, even if you are starting it alongside your current job. I’ve seen newbie bloggers spend up to 35 hours of work per week on their blog, earning nothing. But as I said in the introduction, developing a blog is creating a small business. And every entrepreneur has to spend time or money before they can turn this into a profitable career!
14 – DEVELOP A WORK RHYTHM
The advantage of a blogging career? You organize yourself. Disadvantage ? You organize yourself! For your career to take off, you will need to be serious and know how to focus when you need to. You will need to find a rhythm, a balance, and stick to it in order to move forward. Your best bet is to make a work plan, for writing, posting, communicating, and all other aspects of your blogging job. The fact of writing a black and white plan allows for a much more efficient work organization!
15 – MAKE A LIST OF IDEAS
Ideally, create it on a file in the Cloud (on Google Drive or Dropbox for example), to have access to it, as much on your computer as on your tablet or your smartphone. That way, as soon as you have an idea for an article, boom! You write it down. Then, all you have to do is dig into this suggestion box and start writing. Then you can do the same with a list of keywords to deal with!
16 – KEEP UPDATING
Clearly, don’t become a has-been who thinks they know a lot of things, but who are five years behind! A professional blogger is an expert in their field, and an expert is someone who knows how to update themselves and refine their expertise. This translates into information monitoring, exchanges with professionals, training, etc. Everything that will keep you up-to-date!
THE MARKETING ASPECTS OF A BLOGGING CAREER
17 – LEARN THE BASICS OF INBOUND MARKETING
Why ? Because it is generally thanks to this strategy that you will be able to hope to earn money with your blog. It’s about attracting readers with your content (great, obviously) and then turning them into customers for the products you sell online. If the idea is relatively simple, the application is more complex. It is for this reason that you will need to take the time to understand the basics of this strategy so that you can put it in place as you go.
18 – DEVELOP A DATABASE OF EMAIL ADDRESSES
Continuing from the previous point, learn about autoresponders and how to build a database of email addresses. And in the process, develop this base as soon as possible, by collecting the contact details of readers through your blog (or any other relevant and effective technique, in relation to your target). Maybe this list won’t do you much good at first, but in the medium term, you can definitely use it to turn your loyal readers into customers.
19 – THINK ABOUT MONETIZATION
Let’s face it, starting a blogging career is also thinking about monetizing your work. Otherwise, it’s not called a career, it’s called volunteering. So, learn the different ways to generate income: advertising, affiliation, digital products, training, services, sponsorship… You have to know your tools before using them! However, I’ll say it again, always remember to prioritize your content and don’t downgrade its quality in favor of any monetization.
20 – LEARN TO ANALYZE YOUR STATISTICS
At the start of your blogging career, don’t waste your precious time monitoring your stats, you have a lot more to do. However, you can start by learning how to read these statistics. For example, you will understand that the number of visits is not what is most useful in your analysis: you should better focus on the time spent by Internet users on your blog, on the articles that capture the attention from readers, to the sections that attract the most clicks, etc.
Statistics shouldn’t be used to self-congratulate you, but to get to know your audience and understand how to better satisfy them.
THE TECHNICAL SIDE OF A BLOGGING CAREER
21 – HAVE GOOD WORK EQUIPMENT
Computer, tablet, camera, smartphone, camera… According to your needs.
The important thing is that you are equipped to work in the best conditions and thus provide an excellent result.
22 – BUY CORRECTIVE SOFTWARE
I have a personal preference for Antidote, but choose the one that you think is the best. Believe me, no one is immune to a spelling error, and getting help isn’t a luxury!
23 – TRAIN YOURSELF IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
And since the term “computing” encompasses anything and everything, I am clarifying my thoughts by advising you to learn how to properly use WordPress (or Blogger, or whatever, depending on your preference) as well as the basics of HTML coding. This is a minimum, to allow you to gain autonomy quickly.
24 – USE THE CLOUD
My preference is for Google Drive and particularly Google Docs, but it’s up to you to use Dropbox, iCould or whatever! The important thing is to take advantage of the freedom that the Cloud offers you, but also to save substantial time.
25 – LEARN THE BASICS OF SEO
Search Engine Optmization, if you didn’t know that already. Or “search engine optimization”. At least learn the best practices, but beware, because you can read anything and everything on the subject. My advice: whatever we tell you, think about the content above all!
OPEN UP TO OTHERS TO START YOUR BLOGGING CAREER
26 – WATCH WHAT OTHER BLOGGERS ARE DOING
Regularly read articles in your field, or related fields, to see what others are doing. Running your blogging career with blinders on is not a good idea, so keep an eye out and learn your job by watching others.
However, be careful never to plagiarize (or even translate an English-speaking article for example) and not to inspire yourself too much either. You are a freelance blogger, with your advice, your own style and tone. Nobody wants a carbon copy of what is being done elsewhere!
27 – LEARN TO USE SOCIAL NETWORKS
A professional blogger never uses social media without having goals, and his first goal is to build a community around him and his blogs. Not knowing how to properly manage social media for a business purpose could backfire sooner or later. So, feel free to start with just one network, see how it works and tame it properly before going any further.
28 – BUILD RELATIONSHIPS
In order to develop a community around you, creating relationships is essential, whether with other bloggers, with professionals in your favorite subject or with your readers. Be sociable!
29 – SUBMIT GUEST ARTICLES
In one direction, as in the other! That is, you can just as easily offer bloggers to write for you as you can offer bloggers to write for them. In both cases, it allows you to build lasting relationships and make yourself known.
30 – READ AND DISCUSS INTELLIGEMME NT
Without thinking about SEO (since in truth this technique is no longer useful for this aspect), take the time, when you read articles on your favorite subject, to post informed comments. This will allow you to make a place for yourself in the community, by showing your expertise. Then inserting a link to your blog (if possible), it will be a way to invite others to know you.
31 – OFFER HELP TO OTHERS
There’s nothing better to launch your blogging career than volunteering some of your time to help others, whether it’s through discussion forums or direct messages you receive. Believe me, if you do it right, the feedback will always be positive!
32 – HOLD WEBINARS
It costs nothing and it can allow you, on the one hand, to make yourself known to many people, and on the other hand, to establish your legitimacy and your expertise in your field.
33 – SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE
A good professional blogger is rarely alone in his corner, because like any good entrepreneur, he knows how to surround himself with the right people. They can be web designers, programmers, community managers, SEO specialists, copywriters too… So many professionals who can give you a hand on occasion, and I’m not just talking about free advice, but a lot of professional collaborations (you’re an entrepreneur now, not a broke guy trying to scrape off mediocre free services).
34 – ALWAYS ENGAGE WITH YOUR AUDIENCE
Whatever medium you use, whether with your blog, by email, on your social networks or face to face: never ignore your audience. Realize that without an audience, your blogging career will never take off. And without an audience, you won’t have customers when it’s time to sell your products or services. So pamper them and talk to them often, either personally or as a whole. Your readers will be the first vectors of your work, never forget that.
